Arthur had been in London for the past two weeks, and Ariadne had been hiding out in Paris, dodging her friends and her handler. But Miles was CIA, too, and he'd been at this a lot longer than she - she'd never be able to keep everything from him.

"That you're sleeping with him isn't what has me concerned," he said, his voice low and gruff-sounding over the phone. "If that's what you needed to do to gain his complete trust, then that's your job. But I know you. You have feelings for him."

"No, it's not like that," she said, frustrated. "He's not the big fish here, Miles. There's something else going on. I think we should extend him an offer of immunity - I think he'd be willing to help."

"There is no evidence of any grand dreamshare conspiracies, despite your unpleasant experience at the hands of this... Quentin's goons. He's probably just a rival. Keep your eye on Arthur, that's your job. And be careful. You're already in this up to your neck. Remember who you are and why you're there. You know how charming he can be."

Ariadne frowned. "I know. I'll be okay. Don't worry."

True to her word, Ariadne showed up at Arthur's hotel room the next afternoon, a bag of Thai takeout in her arms and an anticipatory smile on her face as she knocked on his door.

The only thing more cathartic than drawing, in Ariadne's experience, was shooting at things. And after the week she'd had, she needed to shoot some things.

She'd gone into this assignment, bright-eyed and ready to bring down the bad guys. They'd assembled her identity, using her own background in design to get her an in with their cooperative witness, Miles.

But Ariadne hadn't counted on enjoying the dream sharing as much as she had - not after three years of being repulsed by the very idea of it. Nor had she counted on liking the team - Cobb, charismatic but broken; Eames, oozing charm from every pore; Yusuf, a bit absent-minded but genuinely kind; Arthur, always in control but barely concealing something wild and dark.

And now she'd just found out her job wasn't done. Her assignment was going to continue - Cobb and the others, they'd realized, weren't the kingpins they had originally thought. Ariadne was a little relieved, but now they were expecting her to keep her cover, try to get as much information from them as she could. For how long, she didn't know.

The thought made her nervous. So she did the only thing that could help relieve some of her tension - she went to the shooting range. She was intent on the paper target in front of her, putting bullet holes right in the center of the chest.

Their families had gone home two days after Christmas, and Arthur had suggested spending New Year's at Lake Tahoe - a mini-vacation, he called it. Ariadne had readily agreed, and now Arthur was busy loading up the car with their bags - he wouldn't let Ariadne do much to help, but she was helping out, anyway, carrying her suitcase down the stairs awkwardly.

For anyone who isn't aware already, I'm in the process of moving my toys to Dreamwidth. This has been a long time coming, for a number of reasons that I don't really feel like getting into here (if someone is genuinely curious, and/or doesn't understand why I'm doing this, feel free to ask, but I assume most people have at least an idea of the issues with LJ). I may continue to crosspost between the two sites (if you have an LJ account it's easy to comment at DW with OpenID) if it looks like there are quite a few people I want to RP with still active over there, but otherwise, my primary RP playground is going to be DW from here on out.

I highly encourage anyone who doesn't know what Dreamwidth is, or who is hesitating/on the fence about it, to make an account here in the next couple of days (account creation is open until the 1st) and check it out - it's superior to LJ in many ways.

Hey all, I'm flying home to Nebraska tomorrow for ten days, which means my internet access will be limited to my phone and my parents' dinosaur of a computer. So while I plan to keep up with things as best I can, I'll probably be a little slow until about the 30th.

Happy holidays!
